NSW Rego Transfer, Renewal & Cancellation

A comprehensive guide to transferring vehicle ownership, renewing registration, and cancelling rego in New South Wales. Includes required documents, fees, and step-by-step instructions.

Transferring Vehicle Registration in NSW

When you buy or sell a vehicle in NSW, the registration must be transferred to the new owner within a specific timeframe. Failing to transfer promptly results in higher fees. Both buyer and seller have responsibilities in the transfer process.

Transfer Timing Matters

Transfer within 14 days of purchase: $41 fee. Transfer after 14 days: $188 fee. Always transfer promptly to avoid the higher late fee.

Step-by-Step Transfer Process

1

Complete the Transfer Form

Download and complete the 'Application for Transfer of Registration' (Form REG 11) from the NSW Government website. Both buyer and seller must sign the form.

2

Gather Required Documents

Collect proof of identity (e.g., driver's licence), the completed transfer form, and any concession documentation if applicable. The vehicle's current registration certificate is also helpful.

3

Perform a Rego Check

Before finalising the purchase, conduct a registration check to verify the vehicle's status, confirm there are no outstanding restrictions, and check for any concessions that may affect transfer costs.

4

Visit a Service NSW Centre

The transfer must be completed in person at a Service NSW Centre or authorised registry agent. You cannot complete a transfer online. Bring all documents and payment.

5

Pay the Transfer Fee

Pay the applicable transfer fee ($41 within 14 days, or $188 after 14 days). Additional charges may apply if the vehicle has concession rates attached.

6

Receive New Registration Certificate

Once processed, you'll receive a new registration certificate in the new owner's name. The registration number typically stays the same unless personalised plates are involved.

Documents Required for Transfer

Completed Application for Transfer of Registration (REG 11)
Proof of identity (driver's licence or passport)
Concession card (if claiming a concession)
Payment for transfer fee
Vehicle's current registration certificate (if available)
Roadworthy certificate (pink slip) if required

Renewing Vehicle Registration in NSW

NSW vehicle registration can be renewed for 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months. You'll receive a renewal notice approximately 6 weeks before your registration expires. Renewal can be completed online, by phone, at a Service NSW Centre, or through an authorised registry agent.

Four Steps to Renew Your NSW Rego

01

Choose Registration Period

Select 3, 6, or 12 months. Longer periods offer better value but require a larger upfront payment.

02

Get a CTP Green Slip

Purchase Compulsory Third Party insurance from an approved insurer before renewing. Compare prices at greenslips.com.au.

03

Organise a Pink Slip (if required)

Vehicles over 5 years old require an annual safety inspection (eSafety check). The pink slip is valid for 6 months.

04

Pay and Renew

Pay online via Service NSW, by phone, at a service centre, or through a registry agent. Keep your receipt.

Pink Slip (eSafety Check) Requirements

Vehicles over 5 years old require an annual safety inspection from an authorised inspection station. The pink slip is valid for 6 months. It's recommended to use it within 42 days to avoid delays. The inspection covers brakes, tyres, lights, steering, and other safety components.

Cancelling Vehicle Registration in NSW

You may need to cancel your NSW vehicle registration if you're selling the vehicle, writing it off, moving interstate, or the vehicle is no longer roadworthy. Cancellation must be done in person at a Service NSW Centre, and you may be entitled to a partial refund of unused registration fees.

When to Cancel Registration

  • Selling the vehicle to a buyer who will re-register it
  • Vehicle is written off or declared a total loss
  • Moving the vehicle interstate permanently
  • Vehicle is no longer roadworthy and won't be repaired
  • Exporting the vehicle overseas

What You Need to Bring

  • The vehicle's number plates
  • Completed 'Application to Cancel Registration' form
  • Proof of identity
  • Registration certificate (if available)
  • Bank account details for refund (if applicable)

Important: Cancellation must be completed in person at a Service NSW Centre. You cannot cancel registration online. Bring the number plates — they must be surrendered upon cancellation.
